CUPE BC: Volunteering Challenge to all Locals

Dear CUPE BC Affiliated Local Presidents:

On behalf of the CUPE BC Workers of Colour Committee, we would like to issue a challenge to your members to become actively involved with local charities, food banks, shelters and other community organizations that support and provide support to members of society who have or will have life’s challenges.

Volunteering at food banks and shelters is a rewarding experience.  Offering a smile, a listening ear or donating time or money can lift those experiencing conflicts in their lives.  By giving it helps those who need encouragement and support in a world where they are often forgotten.

A few hours can change someone’s life in so many ways.  CUPE believes in supporting those who are in need.  The feeling of helping and involvement with such organizations will leave a lasting impression on your members to want to do more.

Our challenge to you and your local is that your local and your members support, in any way possible, local organizations that help the needy.  Your members will forever be grateful that they were a part of serving the less fortunate in our society.  Thank you for your time and consideration.

CUPE BC: Community Centre to be Run by Public Workers

Albion Community Centre to be run by public workers

MAPLE RIDGE – In a unanimous decision, the Maple Ridge city council agree that public workers will deliver programs and services at the Albion Community Centre. The decision follows an extensive campaign by the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows municipal workers of CUPE 622 calling for the soon to be opened facility to be community controlled and publicly run.

“On behalf of all CUPE 622 members, I want to thank and congratulate the Mayor and Council for backing a publicly run Albion Community Centre,” said Rob Letts, a worker for the City of Maple Ridge and president of CUPE 622. “This was the right decision for the City and the people who will enjoy using the Albion Centre for years to come.”

The council decision comes after a report by the City’s senior management staff evaluating options for the delivery of programs and services when the Albion Centre opens later this year. The report evaluated the many benefits of a publicly run facility and found that it “would provide a higher level of control of the facility…. (and) provide citizens with seamless service delivery.”

During the discussion of the report, councillors praised Maple Ridge workers for their past work in providing recreation programs and services. “To think of anyone else to run the Albion Community Centre just doesn’t make sense to me,’ said Councillor Chelsa Meadus. Councillor Kiersten Duncan added, “We have an opportunity to create something really amazing, and I don’t want to risk that by contracting services out.”

The CUPE 622 campaign encouraging people in Maple Ridge to voice their support for a publicly run Albion Centre was also cited. “It’s refreshing to have received those emails from the community and to hear the voices. For me it certainly played a part in my decision as it was a reflection of what the community wants,” said Councillor Ahmed Yousef.

CUPE 622 is again encouraging the community to contact the Maple Ridge Mayor and Council and thank them for listening to their points-of-view and for keeping the Albion Community Centre public.

“CUPE 622 members proudly serve our community, and we sincerely want to thank all of our neighbours for showing how much they value the public programs and services we provide every day,” said Letts. “This decision is testament to how much this community cares, and how powerful our voices can be to make Maple Ridge a place to live for everyone.”

CUPE Local 1908 President Resigns

Hello members,

It is with heartfelt thanks and sadness that we are announcing the resignation of CUPE 1908 President Kevin Hansen. His last day on duty will be December 27, 2019.

Kevin has been a passionate trade unionist for over 30 years; several of those for which he has served as our Union President. We would like to extend our gratitude for his dedication and we wish him the best in his new endeavors.

On that note: there will be a bi-election for the vacant position of President at our regular meeting being held on January 16, 2020.

Nominations and elections will both occur during the same meeting. If a subsequent officer position is left vacant due to a current officer accepting the role of President, we will nominate and elect for that vacated position during the January meeting as well.

If you would like to nominate yourself or somebody else for the executive position of President of CUPE 1908 then please plan to attend the January meeting. If you would like to disclose your intent to nominate or expression of interest ahead of time, please contact the Executive.

After December 27 and until we have officially elected a new President, if you need presidential advice, please contact:

Upcoming Local Elections

Hello members,

It’s almost Election time!
Local 1908 elections for all Executive positions will take place in November.
Nominations MUST be received during our meeting on October 17, 2019.
Nominations will be accepted in accordance with our Bylaws:

(a)  Nomination
Nominations for Officers shall be received at the regular membership meeting held in the month of October, in the election year for Local 1908.
All members eligible for nomination shall be members in good standing.
To be eligible for a Union Executive position, a member shall have attended at least one of the previous membership meetings held in the previous twelve (12) months.
No nominations shall be accepted unless the member is in attendance at the meeting or acceptance of the nomination is in writing duly witnessed by another member present at the meeting.
No member shall be eligible for nomination if he is in arrears of dues and/or assessments.

To be clear on what this means, in order to be eligible for election, you must:

  1. Let your name stand at the October meeting
  2. Have attended at least one meeting within the past 12 months

Those who let their names stand at the October meeting will be up for election in November. Nominations will NOT be accepted during the November meeting.

If you would like to nominate somebody, or would like to be nominated yourself,
PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND both the October and November meetings.
